This property consists of 226 acres that lay on the banks of the Ohio River. There is nearly three quarters of a mile of river frontage. Included is a large square old farmhouse that has not been updated (I have heard this referred to as preservation by neglect). Also included is a large old hand hewn timber-framed cantilevered bank barn that has been used for hay storage and an enormous hay and tobacco barn that are both in good condition. There are also some other outbuilding of minimal value other than for character.
There are about 60 tillable acres of which about 50 are in the 100 year flood plain. It is currently planted in soybeans and hay. Another ten acres is adjacent to the house and above the flood plain and currently planted in alfalfa. The remainder of the property is in mature woods across the road and gradually rises to the top of the ridge overlooking the Ohio River valley. There are numerous producing apple and peach trees as well as a grape arbor bordering the yard around the house. Although the property is in Kentucky, the nearest neighbor is across the river in Ohio. The Amtrack Cardinal passenger rail line runs the length of the property just above the lower fields so the sounds of the occational train or barge remind you that civilization continues.
There is a wooded area with a sand beach bordering the river and a large pond in one of the lower fields stocked with 2-5 pound bass and 4-15 pound catfish. There are also deer and turkey for some great hunting. This property is nearly adjacent to the Ohio River View property so a cabin could also be placed high up on the ridge and by clearing some trees, there could be views similar to those shown on the Ohio River View page.
Locals say that this farm was once the pride of the county--there's no reason it can't return to that status.
Update: SOLD
Starting at the bottom left and going clockwise: The springtime view from the upstairs window of the old house; Campiste in a wooded grove down at the riverbank; Timber frame bank barn; Sandy beach along the river
This is my boys' favorite property. There is a lot to explore and do. I probably have taken over one hundred photos of this property.
The railroad tracks that run through the property. The Amtrac Cardinal line runs through here six times a week on its way between Chicago and Washington D.C.
This is a huge nine bent tobacco barn on the property. It is about 120 feet by 50 feet and it is five rails high. I put up enough tobacco for the neighbor as a teen that he had to give me his daughter for my wife. Just looking at the size of this barn makes my back hurt.
These are my boys. The four year old is excited becaused these apples are the BIG ONES! In addition to the apples, the farm is a fruit market with grapes, peaches and multiple varieties of apples in the yard. In the woods grows black berries, black and red raspberries, paw paws, and hickory nuts and walnuts. There is also ginseng, yellowroot, and sassafras root. Sassafras tea (root beer)
is my favorite.
This picture was taken in the woods on the hillside overlooking the Ohio River. A cabin could easily be built near the top of the ridge and it could have some amazing views if some trees were cleared.
This is a picture of the back side of the home. The driveway from the road approaches the rea of the house and the front of the house overlooks the river.
